Sam Altman just told the world to get comfortable with AI hacks and scams.
The OpenAI CEO says we need to accept the bad stuff because AI's benefits will be "orders of magnitude" greater.
Bold take especially when 77% of Americans are literally begging tech companies to slow down.
But wait, there's more:
That poll number isn't just big, it's a warning sign for the entire industry
OpenAI just launched visual ads in ChatGPT, because nothing says "we care about safety" like monetizing your chatbot
Iโm Alex. Welcome to L8R by Innov8.
Letโs dive deep.

Sam Altman argues the benefits justify some AI risks
77% want powerful AI slowed or paused for safety checks

Sam Altman argues some AI risks are worth accepting

Sam Altman says the benefits of AI justify accepting some harms. He argues that preventing every scam or misuse would be too high a price if it meant restricting who can use the technology.
Reuters reported his remarks from an October 4 interview with Politico.
He argues AI should remain broadly accessible to the public.
He rejected a model where one lab decides how to distribute the benefits.
He described OpenAIโs lighter-touch approach to regulation as different from Anthropicโs.
Why it matters:
This is an argument about who sets the rules, and who lives with the consequences.
Broad access gives more people useful tools. It also makes misuse harder to contain.
L8Rโs take:
Access matters. But โmore good than badโ is hard to judge if the benefits reach one group and the harms fall on another.
I want to know what happens to people who pay that cost.

77% want powerful AI slowed or paused for safety checks

A US poll found that most adults want powerful AI development slowed or stopped until safety can be evaluated. That is a more specific finding than saying people want every AI tool switched off.
Quinnipiac University released the poll on September 30.
47% preferred slowing development and 30% preferred stopping it until safety could be evaluated.
74% reported little or no trust in AI company leaders.
86% supported independent safety standards, even if those standards slowed development.
The poll measured US attitudes. It does not tell us what Indian readers think.
Why it matters:
The people building AI and the people living with it can see the same progress differently.
Useful products alone may not settle concerns about how powerful systems are tested.
L8Rโs take:
Wanting safety checks does not mean rejecting every useful AI tool.
I would read this as a demand for evidence, and for someone outside the companies to check it.

๐ค ChatGPT plans visual ads during image generation

OpenAI has announced a visual ad format for ChatGPT. It plans to test the format during image generation with an initial group of US advertisers later in October.
The October 5 announcement describes a planned test, rather than a full launch.
OpenAI says ads will be clearly labeled.
It says ads will remain separate from the image a user is generating.
It says advertising will not influence ChatGPTโs answers.
The announcement also adds tools to help advertisers measure results.
Why it matters:
An assistant hears what you want to create. Selling advertising around that request gives brands a useful moment to reach you.
The important question is whether users can clearly separate the paid placement from the result.
L8Rโs take:
An ad beside an AI task can feel like part of the assistantโs advice.
Treat the sponsor as a sponsor, and judge the answer or image separately.
๐ Quick L8R Summary
Altman on risk: He argues AIโs benefits justify some harms and that access should remain broad.
The public wants checks: A US poll found 77% prefer slowing or stopping powerful AI development until safety can be evaluated.
A new ad test: OpenAI plans visual ads during ChatGPT image generation later in October in the US.
